WWDC @ Moscone

I’m going to be up at WWDC for various days next week. If you’re going to be there, please drop me a line. I’d love to met fellow Apple-types in a heavily geeked environment.

[Update]: Yes, I am at WWDC all week. Yes, the wireless network there is swamped. Yes. G5, iSight, Expose… droooooooooooooool. That is all.

[Update]: Notice three of the top 5 Popdex entries to your right (as of 11:16am) are Apple related. Further proof of a disproportionate amount of Apple-zealots in the weblog community.

[Last Update]: If you’re at WWDC and will be traveling down to the Apple campus today for the Bash, I’ll be hovering around the Server table… preferably with a beer in one hand… possibly two. Look for the goofy glasses.

Rands,

You'll probably see the unveiling of the G5's there... Last night there was quite a buzz about a 'slip up' at the apple store (more likely a publicity stunt) where if one went to the G4 page they would have seen a listing for 'the world's fastest computer' - Apple promptly shut down the site, but not before the twinkies over at MacNN caught a screen shot.

The MacNN thread is here: http://www.macnn.com/news/19826

Looks to me that those who predicted the G5 would be IBM's 970 chip (put me in with that bunch) were probably right - as posted by the Register:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/39/31331.html

Other posts -- they literally domino'd after the MacNN thread -- can be lifted from Metafilter:

http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/26532

-mine are from 'phylum sinter'. Anyhow, IF all this is more than a cunning ruse to get people that would have otherwise skipped the WWDC to head that way, you're sure to be in for a treat. Enjoy.

Twinkies?

Rands, please forgive me for asking this question.

I have always taken issue with Apple's word usage in their description of their dual processors. Does "Dual 1.42GHz PowerPC G4" mean 710MHz + 710MHz or 1.42GHz + 1.42GHz processors?

rands wrote:

Dual means TWO of whatever processor is advertised. So, Dual 1.42 means two 1.42 processors...

LMCanteroJr a.k.a. Majestic wrote:

Thank you for clearing that up.

Under different circumstances, I would have been (more) embarrassed to ask that question. But I quote from the Apple website:

"Dual 1.42GHz PowerPC G4"
"Dual PowerPC G4 processors up to 1.42GHz"
"Dual 1.42GHz PowerPC G4 processor configuration"

Now maybe it is the former English major in me, but these three descriptions do not necessarily mean the same thing. Not that Intel and AMD don't have their own unique nomenclature....but enough on that....

If the alleged G5 leak information is genuine, all I can say is, "Wow!"

Rands: for clarification of obscure slang term [apologies]

twinkies = SE Michigan regional [?] dialect for obsessive geeks whose ability to withstand "nuclear disappointment bombs" rivals the food they're named after.

Other possible subcultures containing 'twinkies': D&D kids, the Anime scene, Overclockers, Pokemon/Yu-Gi-Oh (did i spell that right?) people, vinyl purists, etc.

THEN THERE ARE TWINKS

Anyway, great googly moogly those are some nice systems. I sorta wish apple would keep the g4 towers around for a while, but I know that is not to be.

Okay Rands, sorry to dwell on this, but I happened to catch these screenshots from the WWDC on ThinkSecret.com's site:

http://www.thinksecret.com/archives/images/wwdc03g5/systemprofiler.gif
http://www.thinksecret.com/archives/images/wwdc03g5/cpu.gif

Now, these seem to suggest that the Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 has a "top" clock speed of 2.0 GHz. If the dual-processor G5 actually has two 2-GHz processors, shouldn't the clock speed be......higher?

Ok, first go to Apple Store and click on the G5 store -- you'll see the three models available: 1.6Ghz, 1.8Ghz, and DUAL 2Ghz. Can we agree that means there are two processors? Good.

Second, Dual processors does not mean that you get TWICE the gigahertz -- it means that you have another processor to handle operations. Think of it like this... rather than one freeway with a speed limit of 65... you've got TWO freeways next to each other... both with the same speed limit. The cars aren't going any faster... but you've got room for twice as many.

Thanks, Rands. Once again, please forgive the dumbass questions. I honestly couldn't find a straightforward answer to this, and you set straight what several visits to different websites couldn't.
